Harnessing Water Resources In India

If we carefully analyze the report appearing some time back in American news media based on recent satellite mapping that every year water level is receding by one ft. per arum. This is basically due to our over dependence on surface and as well as under ground water resources for meeting day to day demand of water for industry, irrigation and domestic use. With this alarming situation, we need to seriously think to do some thing before time really runs out.

I do remember that it was during early seventies when Dr. K.L.Rao used to be the Hon’ble Union Minister of Power and Irrigation, a plan was evolved to link Ganga with Kauvery river in South India. I do not know what happened thereafter, but I think gives food for thought. I say even when finances may not be readily available, we need to develop plan of integrating our rivers and create network of rivers, which could be utilized not only to ensure that irrigation, industrial and domestic needs are taken care of, but we may also examine if it could help us in developing rivers as waterways/transport media.

This, of course, would require cool thinking and joint effort on a massive scale. To my mind, we should think in this direction and a core group of leading scientists, planners, private enterprise should be set up. Let the beginning be made by creating a small cell in the Planning Commission first.

Our Hon’ble Prime Minister has been voicing his concerns on this score but this has to be given a concrete shape.

Only visionaries can think and take nation forward......

India's needs are rising proportionate to its population. Keeping millions of people dependent on the natural resources is not enough. India has to create ways on how to store the rain water maximum in order to meet the demands for the rest of the year.

It is possible to harvest water during Rains when Rivers are flooded, . Our Educated youths must know that Water percolate through Porus Soil which we find upto certain depth of so called 30- 50 feet than it has a block of Clay which is not Porus this block is normally of 20-40 feet thickness, If we bore a hole in this Slab the water will get Reserve into a Reservoir of Ground for Future Use, Problem we are facing due to Solid Bore wells who dont allow recharging of Ground water from its sides, when it is flooded. Now individuals and Govt. must install perforated Pipes to the depth 200 feet, near the Bank of Rivers who get flooded , The water create pressure on all sides , mean bottom and sides ,so it will percolate to some distance , it get filtered naturally with its Porus sandy surface. but it can not percolate beyond below certain level due to layer of Clay which is none Porus, so the perforated Pipe will allow all water from River into the Ground , with reducing the chance of Flooding the River, The individuals may try it in their Low lying area which remain water logged , which is the cause of soil particles get saturated with water upto the None porus Clay Block, premitive Wells were taking care of Recharging of Ground water from its Porus sides but in last 50 years we have ignored it. If we remove the Solid Pipes of bore wells and replace it with perforated Pipes with submersible pums will improve the situatiom , as Nature has given us more than enough water and no need to Panic.

In the US, the great Mississippi river originates in Lake Itasca, Minnesota and flows through a series of rapids and glacial lakes toward The Twin Cities. The river borders ten states. To the west of the Mississippi River are Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. To the east of the Mississippi are Wisconsin, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.

We have had plans for ages for connecting Ganges to Cauvery and still to be materialised. Between two States Karnataka and Tamil Nadu there are political fights to provide Cauvery water..

Surendra — You said it very rightly. Cool thinking and unity only can resolve this issue.

Sir,

I appreciate your views. We really want some one of these politicians to become Bhagirath of the modern time to do all that what was accomplished by him by bringing Ganga to this earth.

Hey, politicians wake up or you will loose this battle of very survival of the human race...

Is some one listening....
